The International Telecommunication Union (ITU), a branch of the UN whose 193 member states also includes the U.S., is hosting a Working Group meeting on June 20-22, 2012 in Geneva, Switzerland. The purpose of the conference is to seek consensus for an updating of the last set of international telecom regulations, also known as ITRs, which were issued in 1988. This panel briefing provides an important opportunity for a timely and informative panel discussion for Congressional Members and Staff about upcoming major developments at the UN/ITU that could significantly affect the governance of the Internet.

Over 40 leading health-privacy experts from around the globe will gather in Washington for the 2nd International Summit on the Future of Health Privacy to discuss the urgent privacy issues raised by emerging health technologies.

This hearing will examine how advances in consumer electronics – as well as broadcasting, the Internet, and other communications platforms – are changing the way Americans gain access to and consume audio content.

Privacy Law Scholars Conference (PLSC) aims to assemble a wide array of privacy law scholars and practitioners from around the world to discuss current issues and foster greater connections between academia and practice. It will bring together privacy law scholars, privacy scholars from other disciplines (economics, philosophy, political science, computer science), and practitioners (industry, legal, advocacy, and government). Our goal is to enhance ties within the privacy law community and to facilitate dialogue between the different parts of that community (academy, government, industry, and public interest).

"The Future of Internet Economics" will highlight existing research on the economics of broadband and will address such topics as how changing bandwidth consumption patterns could impact future business models, how such changes could affect content creation, and what role, if any, the government should play as the industry grapples with these changes.

A discussion of the coming spectrum crunch, its effects on consumers and the benefits this important resource plays in the continuing mobile revolution. This event will focus on steps Congress can take to continue investment, innovation and increasing consumer welfare.

This event provides a forum where economists and legal scholars can gather together with Northwestern’s own distinguished faculty to present and discuss high quality research relevant to the economics and law of Internet search. The conference will cover academic work on Internet search and the discussion will examine public policy issues in antitrust, regulation, and intellectual property. Attendance is by invitation only.

The focus of this workshop will be the design of the Federal Communications Commission’s program to reimburse the costs that some broadcasters are likely to incur as a result of channel reassignments in connection with the repacking authorized by the 2012 Spectrum Act.

The goals of this workshop are to provide a venue for discussion of the NCCoE public-private partnership structure, and to describe and gather input from individual participants on possible case studies that are expected to form a central focus of collaborative efforts.

With the decline of traditional journalism outlets, some public and independent media organizations are making significant strides in expanding news and information services to fill the gap. And public media is engaging people of all ages and backgrounds with compelling arts and culture programming, storytelling, civic discourse and much more. Even so, many public media outlets have been slow to adapt to changing technologies and market forces. Compounding these challenges, many public broadcasters are also straining under deep cuts in public funding. Against this backdrop we’ll examine philanthropy’s role in supporting innovations that are paving the way for a renewed public media sector, and sustaining the kind of public media system that our country and our democracy require.
