Sen. Sheldon Whitehouse (D-RI) said legislation is needed to reverse the “spectacle” of campaign spending by super-PACs.
Senate Democrats revived the Disclose Act in an election-year push against the “spectacle” of campaign spending by super-PACs. The legislation was crafted by a taskforce of Democratic senators who were asked to craft a response to the Supreme Court’s Citizens United decision, a ruling in 2010 that allowed corporations and unions to spend unlimited funds on election activities. Since that ruling, political spending by super-PACs and nonprofit groups outside of campaigns has been on the rise.
