Comments due on Recovery Act Broadband Initiatives

The Progress and Freedom Foundation (PFF) has told the government that to achieve its goal of ubiquitous broadband, it should make sure companies are free to bid on broadband grant and loan money without worrying about delivering "super-fast" service initially, being bound by new nondiscrimination rules, or being held to an "ill-defined" concept of "underserved" areas.

In comments filed at the National Telecommunications and Information Administration and the Rural Utilities Service, the National Association of State Utility Consumer Advocates said areas that lack broadband availability should receive first priority in allocating funding under broadband investment provisions of Congress' economic stimulus package.

The Center for Democracy and Technology filed comments urging the National Telecommunications and Information Administration to ensure that broadband services supported with stimulus funds will be open to the full range of current and future Internet uses.

In a joint proceeding, the National Telecommunications and Information Administration (Department of Commerce) and the Rural Utilities Service (Department of Agriculture) are requesting comment on the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act of 2009 Broadband Initiatives.
