MCDOWELL CONFIRMED TO FCC
[SOURCE: Broadcasting&Cable, AUTHOR: John Eggerton]
Holy Media Ownership Proceeding, Batman, the FCC is now at full strength! Robert McDowell Friday was confirmed as the fifth FCC commissioner. McDowell, a Republican appointee who has been working as a lobbyist for Comptel, had an easy confirmation hearing, praised by both Republicans and Democrats, but a hold was placed on his nomination, widely believed by Senator Jay Rockefeller over issues having to do with funding for telecommunications services for schools and libraries. Friday's confirmation proves that you should never leave you post until the last Member of Congress has boarded the last plane out of town. Commissioner McDowell received praise from Senate Commerce Committee Chairman Ted Stevens (R-Alaska) -- he picked the nominee, after all -- FCC Chairman Kevin Martin, and now-fellow Commissioners Michael Copps and Jonathan Adelstein (see below).
