The Department of Education, with support from the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) and the Federal Communications Commission (FCC), should establish standards to be adopted by the federal government for locating, sharing and licensing digital educational content by March 2011.
The Department of Education should select standards for digital educational content after consulting with other government agencies, the educational community and the private sector.
Once the standards are selected, the federal government should ensure all educational content it develops or sponsors is compatible with those standards.
The following recommendation lays out specific steps the U.S. Department of Education can take to achieve this.


Throwing cash at America's schools with the hope the loan will instantly translate into a transcendent educational experience has always been short-sighted. Thus, it comes as no surprise that on "Today's" Education Nation week, Obama told Matt Lauer that education reform is the key. The audience that Obama was hoping to get to was the stay-at-home moms and dads. He said that instructors need to be more responsible for the education of students which means extending the school year.
