Study the communications requirements of electric utilities

The Department of Energy released Communications Requirements of Smart Grid Technologies which examines how the communications needs of utilities and the electrical grid are likely to evolve as Smart Grid technologies become more widely used. This report recommends that to improve overall coordination, utilities and other Smart Grid constituents should be represented on key federal industry committees that address communications- and network-related security and reliability issues.

The Department of Energy (DOE), in collaboration with the Federal Communications Commission, should study the communications requirements of electric utilities to inform Federal Smart Grid policy.
DOE, in collaboration with the FCC, should conduct a thorough study of the communications requirements of electric utilities, including, but not limited to, the requirements of the Smart Grid.
DOE should collect data about utilities' current and projected communications requirements, as well as the types of networks and communications services they use.
