IMPROVING ICANN TRANSPARENCY WILL TAKE TIME
[SOURCE: Center for Democracy & Technology]
The Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers (ICANN) should devote significant time and resources to the challenge of improving the transparency and accountability of its decision-making processes. In preliminary comments this week, CDT praised ICANN for launching an inquiry into how to build greater transparency and accountability into its operations, but urged the organization not to rush a process designed to fix one of its longest-standing problems. ICANN had initially sought to implement new procedures by December 2006, and is now targeting March 2007, which may leave insufficient time to fully study the problem and develop a satisfactory solution. CDT's preliminary comments offer several recommendations for shining more daylight on ICANN's activities.
