DAVIS: CONGRESS MIGHT SPEND MORE ON CONVERTER BOXES
[SOURCE: Multichannel News, AUTHOR: Ted Hearn]
The new Democratic Congress might "double or triple" the $1.5 billion already earmarked to assist consumers who want to purchase converter boxes to keep analog-TV sets running after completion of the government-mandated transition to digital-broadcast TV Feb. 17, 2009, Rep. Tom Davis (R-VA) said Monday at the 40th International Consumer Electronics Show. Increasing spending on converter boxes could cut into the $10 billion in revenue expected from the auction of 60 megahertz of spectrum that analog TV stations are expected to surrender after going to all-digital transmission.
