Google released a report showing the state-by-state economic impact of its business. The company is growing faster in Illinois than it is overall, thanks to customers such as fast-growing Internet companies Groupon and GrubHub as well as consumer-products giants Kraft Foods Inc. and MillerCoors LLC.
Google, which sells advertising related to its Internet-search business, said revenue from Illinois-based customers big and small grew more than 30% last year. That’s nearly twice as fast as the 18% growth Google saw in its U.S. business, and faster than the 24% growth it saw last year in overall revenue, which hit $29.3 billion. Illinois also has an outsized impact on Google’s sales, accounting for about 6% of its U.S. revenue, even though the state accounts for 4% of the nation’s economic output and population. Among Google’s 10 largest customers is Groupon, the Chicago-based company that leads the fast-growing market for online daily deals from local merchants. Northfield-based Kraft has spent heavily online to support its Miracle Whip brand. Google said it’s also getting strong growth from small companies, such as Burr Ridge-based Personalization Mall, which offers personalized gifts online, and TSS Radio LLC, a Chicago-based seller of satellite-radio equipment.
