KEVIN MARTIN'S DATE WITH (DIGITAL) DESTINY
[SOURCE: Broadcasting&Cable, AUTHOR: John Eggerton]
Rumored to have political aspirations in North Carolina, Federal Communications Commission Chairman Kevin Martin now says he plans to be at the FCC on February 17, 2009 when analog TV broadcasting in the US is set to end. In this Q&A, he addresses issues related to the DTV transition: 1) the public interest obligations of digital broadcasters -- he believes the FCC has been setting these obligations, but may need to adopt new rules on disclosure of public interest performance; 2) carriage of DTV signals on local cable systems; 3) media ownership for people of color and women; 4) a la carte cable pricing; 5) this week's DTV education forum and more.
