GOOGLE ASKS FCC TO IGNORE SPRINT, T-MOBILE ON WHITE SPACES
[SOURCE: Wall Street Journal 1/23, AUTHOR: John Letzing]
Google asked the Federal Communications Commission on Tuesday to ignore opposition to using so-called "white spaces" spectrum for broader Internet access from mobile operators Sprint Nextel and T-Mobile USA. Earlier this month, Sprint and T-Mobile asked the FCC to reject plans put forward by Google, Microsoft and a number of other technology companies to allow unlicensed use of mobile devices on the white-spaces spectrum. The mobile operators said that using such devices would interfere with licensed broadcasts, while better uses could be found for the spectrum. But in a letter filed with the FCC, Google argued that the mobile operators' belated entry into the white-spaces debate should be "set aside."
