The Corporation for Public Broadcasting (CPB) has awarded American Public Media (APM) a $4.1 million grant over two years to expand its Public Insight Network – a digital platform that will significantly increase public media’s local and regional news coverage.
The enhanced content produced as a result of this expansion will better serve communities across broadcast, online and mobile platforms. The Public Insight Network, or PIN, brings together a network of 120,000 citizen sources from a variety of disciplines, who agree to share their expertise, insights and first-hand knowledge, with experienced journalists from 45 newsrooms, including 15 of the top 20 media markets, who harness that intelligence to inform, diversify and fortify their reporting. CPB’s investment will add more than 100,000 new citizen sources to the network and improve public radio’s news service across the country by expanding PIN to 50 additional public media newsrooms. This expanded network of informed citizens will broaden the size and diversity of sources that inform public media journalism, providing reporters with new and different perspectives to help promote greater accuracy and transparency in their coverage. The grant will also facilitate development of features that will enhance journalists’ use of PIN, including new tools to better vet and use the knowledge of network participants, and social networking features and mobile apps for sharing content and fostering dialogue among PIN sources.
