FCC Nominees Breeze Through Senate Hearing

Tennessee regulator Deborah Tate, a Republican, breezed through her confirmation hearing before the Senate Commerce Committee, and appears headed for approval by the full Senate this week -- a move that would restore a 2-2 partisan split on the FCC. Questions at the nomination hearing covered a wide range of issues, including indecency, Internet telephony and congressional efforts to update the nation's telecom laws, but faced no resistance from the panel. Tate said that as a mother of three, she has many concerns about "indecent" television content. "It's important that the commission enforces the laws that we have," she said. Tate, citing her background as a mediator, said that as a state regulator she has focused on consumer outreach and forging industry consensus.
