TRIBUNE CO WILL CUT UP TO 500 JOBS
[SOURCE: Editor&Publisher, AUTHOR: Joe Strupp]
The Tribune Company is planning to cut up to 500 people, about 2% of its nationwide workforce -- including some 100 to 150 jobs at the Los Angeles Times. The job cuts are focused on the corporate staff and the company's nine newspapers, including, besides The Times, the Chicago Tribune, Newsday in New York, the Orlando Sentinel, the Baltimore Sun and the Hartford Courant. The decision was reached during meetings Monday and Tuesday among senior executives at Tribune's Chicago headquarters. The cuts would apparently not affect Tribune's broadcast division, consisting of nearly two dozen television stations. At the Hartford Courant, workers were told that "advertising revenue is currently down 14% from last year, losses are across the board with the greatest declines in our national and classified businesses. Our Advertising department is doing everything they can to turn this situation around." At The Sun of Baltimore, the same 45-job cut figure was noted in a memo from Editor Tim Franklin to employees. And at the flagship Chicago Tribune, Publisher Scott C. Smith revealed plans to trim 100 jobs throughout the Chicago Tribune Media Group.

* 'Disturbing' Tribune Cuts No Surprise to Union Leaders
Newsroom union leaders at Newsday of Melville, N.Y., and The Sun of Baltimore, the only two Tribune Company dailies with editorial bargaining units, were not surprised with today's announcement of further Tribune job cuts -- and said they actually welcomed the option of buyouts over layoffs.
