Australia has the most government intervention in national broadband internet planning among the 50 countries examined by the Economist Intelligence Unit.
Australian government-owned NBN Co. is rolling out a A$36 billion (US$35.3 billion) high speed fiber-optic internet network covering 93% of Australian homes. The project has been condemned by opposition lawmakers as a waste of money. The report, "Full speed ahead: The government broadband report Q3 2011," said higher levels of public-sector funding generally correspond to more government intervention in terms of owning and operating broadband networks.
