The race for president is entering a new phase as Republican candidates unleash a series of television ads in Iowa, New Hampshire and other early voting states intended to brand themselves and their rivals before the first ballots are cast in less than 10 weeks. The complexion and dynamics of an election can change dramatically once candidates turn heavily to advertising, especially in small and relatively inexpensive media markets such as Iowa. With a lull now before the next round of debates starting in mid-November, a burst of ads could give a leg up to any candidate as primary and caucus voters begin to make their selections.
