Exploring Online Hate

New Zealand. Pittsburgh. Charlottesville. The threat from online extremism is growing and in the wake of these and other attacks, the public outcry over far-right extremist recruitment and messaging online has reached a tipping point. As communities of hate and far-right ideologues become ever more savvy at mobilizing via social media, the calls for mitigating hateful content on the social networks will grow ever more intense. Yet these discussions should be based on data and insight rather than fear and intuition.

With that in mind, New America and the Anti-Defamation League have built an interactive dashboard to monitor and better understand extremist activity on Twitter. The dashboard provides a visual and quantitative understanding of the scale and scope of hateful content targeting minority communities. The project is part of a larger effort to understand how hate spreads online and in the real world.

Please join New America and the Anti-Defamation League for the official launch of this new dashboard. The event will include two panels that explore both "spaces of hate" and "targets of hate." We look forward to seeing you.
