Attacks on Mexican media surge 80 percent under Peña Nieto

Attacks on the press have surged 80 percent in the first two years of Enrique Peña Nieto’s government compared with the average during his predecessor’s six-year term, according to a new report on freedom of expression in Mexico. Investigative reporters have long faced a deadly gamble in Mexico, amid violent drug cartels and authorities in cahoots with organised crime. The New York-based Committee to Protect Journalists ranks Mexico 10th worldwide in terms of killings since 1992.
