Cable's Family Packages Temporarily Placate Lawmakers

The announcement by major cable operators that they will offer family-friendly packages has temporarily quashed industry concerns that the government would require them to sell pay television channels "a la carte," or channel-by-channel. Still, modifications may be made. FCC Chairman Kevin Martin and Commissioner Michael Copps have questioned the lack of sports programming in the channel lineups by each of the six multi-channel providers that have announced family tiers. Cable critics say the lack of the popular sports shows and the limited amount of news demonstrates the industry's lack of commitment to a successful consumer acceptance of family tiers.
