FCC Chairman Wheeler's Response to Members of Congress Regarding E911 Location Accuracy

On Jan 28, 2015, House Commerce Committee Chairman Fred Upton (R-MI) and Ranking Member Frank Pallone, Jr (D-NJ) wrote to Federal Communications Commission Chairman Tom Wheeler to encourage the FCC to adopt a technology-neutral solution to establish indoor location accuracy rules for 9-1-1 calls. On Jan 20, Sen Chuck Schumer (D-NY) wrote Chairman Wheeler to encourage the FCC to finalize the rulemaking process and swiftly implement new rules for emergency 9-1-1 calls. On Feb 27, 2015, Chairman Wheeler responded to the members of Congress by stating the FCC adopted an Order on Jan 29 that significantly improves the E911 location accuracy rules. Chairman Wheeler also went into detail about the Order and the specific efforts taken by the FCC to improve location of 9-1-1 cell phone calls.
