S. 1725, Assure Emergency and Interoperable Communications for First Responders Act of 2005 A bill to provide grants of up to $400 million for emergency communications gear. Introduced by Sen. Lieberman and co-sponsored by Sens. Collins (R-Me.), Akaka (D-Hawaii) and McCain (R-Ariz.), the bill would create an Office of Emergency Communications, Interoperability & Compatibility at the Homeland Security Dept., replacing the Office for Interoperability & Compatibility. It also calls for more research and two pilot projects to test equipment for first responders.
