CDT ENDORSES BILL TO PROTECT POLITICAL SPEECH ONLINE
[CENTER FOR DEMOCRACY & TECHNOLOGY]
CDT is urging Congress to pass a bill that would protect the rights of online political speakers, without creating large new loopholes in campaign finance law. Introduced by Reps. Charles Bass (R-NH) and Tom Allen (D-Maine), H.R. 4900 exempts the vast majority of bloggers and other individual Internet speakers from burdensome reporting requirements. In an opinion piece published in Roll Call, CDT argues that 4900 -- which was based on a CDT proposal -- is more complete than a competing measure addressing the same issue. The House is expected to take up the issue this week.
