DVDs now officially reign supreme in homes in the United States. According to data released this week by Nielsen Media Research, for the first time in history more Americans own DVD players than VCRs. DVD player penetration is now more than 81 percent, a huge jump from the 6.7 percent adoption rate Nielsen found when it started tracking figures in 1999. VCR ownership during that time period, meanwhile, dropped below 80 percent from 88.6 percent. But there’s more here than simply one standard replacing another. With the proliferation of iPods and broadband Internet, consumers are facing an ever-increasing collection of options when it comes to experiencing multimedia at home.
