Internet service provider EarthLink said Tuesday that it would cut 900 jobs - or about half its work force - and close four offices in an effort to reduce operating costs. The moves come as the company continues struggling to generate revenues as dial-up access customers turn to high-speed alternatives from cable and phone companies. The company had counted on the right to sell customers access to citywide wireless networks in exchange for helping cities build the networks. But amid questions about customer demand and the technology's performance, EarthLink announced in April that it was reviewing new deployments while evaluating the performance of the current rollouts in four cities.

* Municipal Wi-Fi too big a challenge in Texas?

When EarthLink came down to Houston, last April to sign a contract to provide Wi-Fi service across the city’s enormous 640 square miles, it probably had big dollar signs in its visions. However, looks like the ISP may be backing away from that vision now that it has had a chance to sober up. The Houston Chronicle reported last week that EarthLink is months behind schedule in getting started with Houston’s Wi-Fi project, and there are doubts it will go forward at all.
