My 10 fearless high-tech predictions for 2012
January 4, 2012
[Commentary] Here are 10 things that will absolutely, positively happen next year:
- We will buy more smartphones than PCs and laptops for the first time: We've been getting closer. But this will be the year. It's just one more sign that we're living in the post-PC era. And before you jot that angry email, yes, I know there are still more PCs than mobile gadgets. But that sad little box is not the center of our computing world anymore.
- Facebook's IPO will be real, and it will be spectacular.
- Tesla: The company will deliver its much anticipated Model S in 2012 on time, sparking hopes that the electric car will enter the mainstream.
- Apple will stumble: In Year One A.S., (After Steve), the company will introduce updates to most of its major gadgets, and maybe even the rumored Apple TV. But none will spark quite the same excitement or sales growth.
- Netflix will continue to struggle to recover from its self-inflicted wounds.
- Yahoo will eventually make a decision about its future, but we won't care.
- At least one Solyndra executive will be indicted.
- Congress will kill the Stop Online Piracy Act.
- VC funding will remain flat.
- Video game consoles will continue to ebb.
