STEVENS INTRODUCES 911 MODERNIZATION ACT
[SOURCE: US Senate Commerce Committee press release]
Senator Ted Stevens (R-Alaska), Vice Chairman of the Senate Commerce, Science and Transportation Committee, introduced legislation to upgrade the 911 system used to reach operators in an emergency. Sen Stevens noted that the 911 system in his state has not been fully deployed which has led to the death of Alaskans who tried to call 911 and failed to reach help. This bill expedites the funding for new 911 technological upgrades using money that Congress has already allocated. The reconciliation bill of 2005 made $43 million available from the auction of TV spectrum now scheduled for 2008. This bill will make those funds available to public safety groups immediately. The funds will be replaced when the auction is held two years from now.
