TELECOMS TAPS INTO SILICON VALLEY EXPERTISE

Silicon Valley, birthplace of the semiconductor industry and then of Google, Yahoo and eBay, is experiencing a fresh wave of growth as a telecommunications innovator. “Smartphone Valley” companies are tapping computing and Internet networking expertise as handsets become more like computers and telephony shifts to Internet protocol (IP) communications. Nokia, the world’s biggest handset maker, named its first non-Finn chief technology officer last week Bob Iannucci and said he would be based in Silicon Valley, emphasising the importance of the technology hub to the telecoms group.
