Verizon trials 1 Gb/s link over FiOS platform

Verizon announced it has successfully completed a trial of 1 Gb/s connectivity over its FiOS infrastructure to an existing FiOS business customer. The trial was conducted in June in Taunton (MA) using existing gigabit passive optical network equipment from Motorola. That platform supports 2.4 Gb/s downstream and 1.2 Gb/s upstream to a neighborhood node, where it is split between multiple customers who share the total throughput. According to Verizon, the trial involved bringing a new fiber connection from an existing GPON system at the central office to a second optical network terminal (ONT) at the customer premises. The second ONT was provisioned for the new 1 Gb/s service tier, with the customer's existing FiOS service left in place. According to Verizon, throughput speeds over the test connection were measured at 925 Mb/s to a local server and more than 800 Mb/s to a regional test speed server located more than 400 miles away. The pre-existing FiOS connection showed no degradation in services, according to the carrier.
