Senate Commerce Committee Advances Broadband Bills

The Senate Commerce Committee approved a number of bills and nominations in executive session including two of particular interest:
- S.163, Telecommunications Skilled Workforce Act; Sponsors: Sens. John Thune, (R-SD) Jon Tester (D-MT), Gary Peters (D-MI), Roger Wicker (D-MS), Jerry Moran (R-KS). The bill requires the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) to establish an interagency working group to develop recommendations for addressing telecommunications workforce needs. The FCC must also establish and issue guidance on how states can meet the workforce needs of the telecommunications industry, including guidance on how a state workforce development board can (1) utilize federal resources available to meet telecommunications industry workforce needs; and (2) promote and improve recruitment in qualified industry-led workforce development programs, including the Telecommunications Industry Registered Apprenticeship Program. - S.198, Data Mapping to Save Mom’s Lives Act; Sponsors: Sens. Jacky Rosen (D-NV), Deb Fischer (R-NE), Todd Young (IN), Brian Schatz (D-HI), Ed Markey (D-MA), Richard Blumenthal (D-CT), Amy Klobuchar (D-MN), Gary Peters (D-MI). Would require the FCC incorporate data on maternal health outcomes with broadband health mapping tools.
