FCC Chairman Ajit Pai talks rural broadband at Wichita conference

Federal Communications Commission Chairman Ajit Pai spoke to a group trying to get internet access to more people in Kansas. "Bandwidth needs for rural communities are higher than people think," FCC Chairman Ajit Pai said. "There has to be a business case," Chairman Pai said. "There has to be a return on investment. So that, in some cases, requires federal subsidies." "Some people, for example when they think of the internet, they might think, all the person needs to do is to download Netflix," Pai said.

Broadband issues angering rural Kansas residents

Rural Kansas residents are angered by bad cellphone connection in Conway Springs (KS) due to only one service provider working in the area. "It's kind of a monopoly as far as the cellphone service goes," said Clay Murphy, superintendent of Conway Springs schools. A map released by Gov Laura Kelly (D-KS) showed the broadband connection throughout the state of Kansas. In rural Kansas areas it was the lowest, including Conway Springs. "Even the one's that have the carrier depending on where you're at in town or on the edge of town, you can't get service," Murphy said.
