President Barack Obama's decision to grant a written "interview" to China's state-run news agency is fueling questions about limits on press freedom in China and about the best way for American leaders to engage with the media in a country where most news outlets are under tight government control. Prior to leaving for a three-day visit to China, president Obama answered questions submitted in writing by a reporter for the Xinhua News Service. The decision to offer a written interview to Xinhua, rather than an in-person one, also seems to undercut the White House's calls for now-President Xi to take live questions from reporters following talks the American and Chinese leaders are holding.
