Twitter is a good investment
[Commentary] Twitter has given the word: If City Hall approves tax relief for the long-blighted Mid-Market area, the company will stay in San Francisco.
This is a good deal for the city. The retention of this vibrant and fast-growing company could have a multitude of positive ripple efforts, starting with the arrival of Twitter's 350 employees. Mayor Ed Lee's office reports that the prospect of Twitter's presence in Mid-Market - along with the dangling of a payroll tax exemption to all other comers - is attracting interest from other businesses. Under the proposal, which is expected to be considered by a Board of Supervisors committee next week, Twitter would be liable for the 1.5 percent payroll tax on its current workforce (about $535,000 a year) but not on any future growth in jobs.
