Here's where Chicago's digital divide lies
Mayor Rahm Emanuel plans to bring low-cost broadband access to another 1 million Chicagoans and free Internet training through nonprofit Connect2Compete.
There's no shortage of opportunity to attack the digital divide in Chicago. Neighborhoods with the least access include Hermosa at 36 percent and Garfield Park at 44 percent. Much of the West Side and Far Southeast Side have about 50 percent access. Compare that to North Center, which has the highest penetration at 94 percent broadband usage, followed by Wrigleyville, Lakeview, Lincoln Park and the South Loop at 93 percent. Chicago was selected as a pilot city for the Washington-based “Everyone On” campaign. The effort combines computer training at libraries and other facilities with home Internet access to increase digital literacy.
