Huawei Invests in 5G Networks

China’s Huawei Technologies is currently developing fifth-generation network technology, which will enable mobile users to have wireless connection experience similar to today’s home fiber network environment. But keen mobile geeks shouldn’t hold their breath – Huawei says the 5G technology will only be ready seven years from now, in 2020 for telecom operators to adopt if they want to.

Most telecommunications operators world-wide are just moving toward fourth-generation high-speed networks, also called LTE or long-term evolution, and the widespread adaptation of 5G is still years away. China’s largest telecom operators are just starting to run trial operations of LTE networks. 5G becomes important in a world where more everyday objects – from houses and cars to various consumer goods – get connected to the Internet. The 5G technology is one of the top priorities in Huawei’s research and development investment, said Tong Wen, who leads the company’s 5G technology development efforts.
