Auction 108 of spectrum in the 2.5 GHz band closed after raising less than $428 million, a considerably lower amount in comparison with what we have seen in other recent auctions. The spectrum is considered mid-band, which is widely seen as supporting the optimum mixture of speed and coverage for 5G.

Vermont has been funding a considerable portion of projects undertaken by communications union districts (CUDs) – local organizations representing at least two towns that will own the broadband infrastructure that they deploy. One of these CUDs is NEK (Northeast Kingdom) Broadband, which represents five counties. NEK Broadband expects to need between $165 million and $185 million to achieve the goal of ensuring high-speed broadband internet service is available to the most rural and underserved communities.

Small independent telecom companies increased rural network investment “slightly” in 2021, according to a new report from accounting firm FORVIS. This was true for companies with annual revenues below $2.5 million and those with revenues exceeding $25 million and for all companies in between.

Frontier has ambitious fiber goals, which include about 3 to 4 million homes that will probably require government subsidy to reach. CFO Scott Beasley said Frontier intends to be active with government funding programs to do just that. “We want to compete for subsidies on all of that 3 to 4 million homes and if you take a step back and think about our purpose which is build gigabit America, I mean that’s why we’re excited to build,” he said. Of course, Frontier is no stranger to government funding programs for broadband.
