FCC TO HOLD DIGITAL TELEVISION CONSUMER EDUCATION WORKSHOPS
ON CONSUMERS IN RURAL AREAS AND ON TRIBAL LANDS AND CONSUMERS WITH DISABILITIES

Washington, DC -- The Federal Communications Commission has announced that it will hold two more Digital Television (DTV) Consumer Education Workshops. Each workshop will last approximately three to four hours.

The next workshop will be held on January 31, 2008, and will address issues related to ensuring that consumers in rural areas and on tribal lands are prepared for the DTV transition.

Headlines Will Return January 2

As is our tradition here (really, you can look it up), we're off to serve as back-up elves at Macy's for the remainder of the year and, therefore, will be unable to provide you, our dedicated readers, with our Headline service from December 24 to January 1. (OK, OK, if something really important happens -- if, say, the FCC finds a way for AT&T to buy Verizon -- we'll be sure to let you know.) We'll be back on January 2. We wish everyone communications-filled holidays. Have a safe, relaxing, happy break -- you deserve it!

CJR asked Mark Cooper, director of research at the Consumer Federation of America, to explain what the Federal Communications Commission ruling allowing certain newspapers and television stations to share the same ownership means, whether it will help or hurt journalism, how it came to be, and what his organization -- which opposed the move -- might do to stop it.
