The head of the Federal Trade Commission hailed her agency’s ability to protect online competition ahead of a likely regulatory rollback that would make the agency responsible for maintaining a free and open internet.  The FTC was responsible for policing the internet before the 2015 expansion of net neutrality regulations, and if Pai’s order passes, the agency will re-inherit that authority. “The FTC’s ability to protect consumers and promote competition in the broadband industry isn’t something new and far-fetched,” Acting FTC Chairwoman Maureen Ohlhausen said.

A panel of Democratic Reps wants to commit $400 million to secure future elections from hackers. That $400 million is what’s left over in appropriated funds from the 2002 Help America Vote Act, which focused on making voting easier for people with disabilities. The money could be used to replace outdated and unsecure voting machines that lack paper receipts for votes, the Democrats’ independent election security task force said in a Nov 20 letter to leaders of the House Appropriations Committee.

Next Century Cities released a playbook on tech-powered civic engagement detailing lessons learned over the past year among its three Benton Next Generation Engagement Award winners: Austin (TX), Louisville (KY) and Raleigh (NC). The Washington, D.C.-based broadband advocacy group wants the guide to serve as a checklist for cities’ future projects. Communities are encouraged to engage all stakeholders in a civic tech project area, collaborate across sectors and have their approach match project function.
