5G coalition presses FCC to allow FWA in lower 12 GHz band
The 5G for 12 GHz Coalition is urging the Federal Communications Commission to take action by December 31, 2023, to expand the 12.2 GHz band for terrestrial fixed use, giving entities like Dish Network the ability to use the band for fixed wireless access (FWA). The 12.2 GHz band is currently allocated to Direct Broadcast Satellite (DBS), non-geostationary orbit fixed satellite service (NGSO FSS) and fixed service.
Ergen: A UScellular Asset Sale Could be an “Opportunity and Positive” for DISH
If UScellular were to sell some of its wireless assets, “under most scenarios that’s an opportunity and a positive for where we’re trying to go,” said Charlie Ergen, chairman of the board of DISH Network and
Biden-Harris Administration Awards First Grants from Wireless Innovation Fund
The Department of Commerce’s National Telecommunications and Information Administration (NTIA) awarded nearly $5.5 million in the first round of grants from the Public Wireless Supply Chain Innovation Fund. This first round of funding will support research and development and testing activities related to evaluating energy efficiency, measuring performance of interoperable equipment and testing methods for sharing spectrum. The funding totaled $5,482,052 and was awarded to projects at Northe
FCC Releases Public Notice on Tribal Spectrum Access and Data
The Federal Communications Commission's Wireless Telecommunications Bureau and Office of Native Affairs and Policy seek comment on ways in which the FCC can improve its understanding of how and the extent to which Tribal Nations and the Native Hawaiian Community are able to access wireless spectrum today. This information will be used as the FCC develops and implements new and existing policy initiatives designed to increase broadband connectivity in Tribal communities.
FCC Launches Technical Inquiry Into Spectrum Usage Data
The Federal Communications Commission voted to launch a proceeding designed to advance its understanding of non-federal spectrum usage and take advantage of new data sources, methods, and technologies to do so in a cost-effective, accurate, scalable, and actionable manner. This Notice of Inquiry will explore how these new tools can promote effective spectrum management and identify new opportunities for innovation. This proceeding will explore the feasibility, benefits, and limitations of techniques to understand non-Federal spectrum usage.
Satellite operators poised for $9 billion payday after clearing C-band spectrum
A SpaceX Falcon 9 rocket launched early with the last of a dozen new C-band video relay satellites purchased by Intelsat and SES to help clear spectrum for the rollout of 5G wireless services in the US. Intelsat and SES, two of the world's largest geostationary communications satellites operators, are on track to receive nearly $9 billion in incentive payments from 5G cell network operators by the end of 2024. The payments are due after Intelsat and SES clear the lower 300 MHz of C-band spectrum, which is being transitioned from satellite services to terrestrial 5G under the supervision of
AT&T to buy more spectrum across Oklahoma
AT&T appears to be in the early stages of improving its 5G network across parts of Oklahoma, based on the company's latest filings with the Federal Communications Commission. AT&T told the FCC that it reached an agreement with Pioneer Telephone Cooperative to acquire some of that company's 700MHz and PCS spectrum licenses in Oklahoma. "By acquiring control of the ...
Pentagon, telecom industry’s battle over spectrum symptomatic of a troubled system
For decades, the Department of Defense (DoD) has had relatively unquestioned access to a large portion of the electromagnetic spectrum — a critical resource that enables capabilities like radars, satellite communications, and navigation systems. However, a number of leaders at the Pentagon are concerned that access may soon be taken away. There has been a years-long battle between the DoD and the commercial telecommunications industry over access to the 3.1-3.45 GHz S-band. That portion of spectrum has been solely designated to the DoD for decades.
CTIA Announces Umair Javed as Senior Vice President, Spectrum
Umair Javed has joined CTIA-The Wireless Association as Senior Vice President, Spectrum. In this capacity, Javed will shape and coordinate the organization’s spectrum advocacy. Javed comes to CTIA from the Federal Communications Commission. As Chief Counsel, he played a central role in shaping our nation’s spectrum policy. During his tenure, Javed helped focus the agency on identifying mid-band spectrum for 5G, oversaw one of the most successful auctions in US history, and launched the FCC’s Spectrum Coordination Initiative to enhance partnerships between agencies and the private sector.
FCC Chairwoman Rosenworcel Introduces New Spectrum Rules for Commercial Space Launches
Federal Communications Commission Chairwoman Jessica Rosenworcel shared with her colleagues final rules to ensure spectrum certainty for communications services used during commercial space launches. As private companies have assumed a vital role in the launch and operation of space satellites, scientific exploration, and transportation of astronauts both for public and commercial purposes, they need access to reliable and predictable wireless communications services and these new rules, if adopted by a vote of the full FCC, will make that resource available.
